Daphne Malthe legt uit. In 2014 wordt de voetafdruk van Pelgrimvaders-leiders William en Dorothy Bradford in Delfshaven vereeuwigd in een koperen plaquette. Dit is speciaal bedoeld voor Amerikaanse toeristen die op zoek zijn naar de ‘roots’ van de ‘founding fathers’ en worden als helden gezien. Wat we zouden moeten weten, is dat diezelfde William Bradford in zijn “History of the Plymouth Plantation” verslag doet van wat één van de eerste genocides wordt genoemd. “When the Pilgrims came to New England they were coming not to vacant land, but to territory inhabited by tribes of Indians. The governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, John Winthrop, created the excuse to take Indian land by declaring the area legally a “vacuum.” (Bron Howard Zinn) In 1637 leidde John Mason een aanval op het versterkte dorp van de Pequot stam. Hij koos ervoor niet te vechten volgens de wetten van oorlog (oog in oog), maar het dorp in brand te steken met alle inwoners er in. William Bradford schrijft: “Those that escaped the fire were slaine with the sword; some hewed to pieces, others rune throw with their rapiers, so as they were quickly dispatchte, and very few escaped. It was conceived they thus destroyed about 400 at this time. It was a fearful sight to see them thus frying in the fire, and the streams of blood quenching the same, and horrible was the stincke and sente thereof, but the victory seemed a sweet sacrifice, and they gave the prayers thereof to God, who had wrought so wonderfully for them, thus to inclose their enemise in their hands, and give them so speedy a victory over so proud and insulting an enimie.” (Bron: Howard Zinn). Saillant detail: John Mason, de aanvoerder van dit bloedbad, heeft zijn militaire opleiding in Nederland genoten, in dienst van het leger van Frederik Hendrik van Oranje Nassau, tijdens de 80-jarige oorlog. In 1889 kreeg John Mason een groot standbeeld voor zijn overwinning op de Pequot. In 1996 zijn het standbeeld en plakkaat verwijderd.
